Map of corn production in late 19th century US. I found this while looking through USDA agricultural census records for a publication I was working on. There was also an interesting essay on the origins of maize in the Americas. It’s remarkable what they got right (from our present point of view, informed by more than a century of archaeology, and by recent genome mapping in particular), and what they didn’t.
